PHILADELPHIA — A Walmart employee was taking his lunch break early Saturday when he saved a man who had fallen into the Delaware River while taking a selfie.
Harry Ulmer, who works overnights as a maintenance supervisor, was taking his lunch break around 2 a.m. when he heard screams about 200 yards away, WPVI reported.
“I usually take my lunch at 2 a.m. and I don’t stay there. So, by me running late, that’s why I heard him, or I would have never been there,” Ulmer told WPVI. “He kept hollering, 'Help me, help me. I said, ‘Alright, hold on. I’m on my way.’”
Ulmer hopped a fence at a pier and found the man, just out of reach. He ran back to his car to get a rope from his car and called 911. He broke off a branch from a tree, tied it to the rope and threw it to the man.
“I kept telling him, ‘Grab the log, grab the log, and I’ll pull you into safety here,’” Ulmer said.
Ulmer told the man to kick while he pulled him in. First responders arrived shortly later. He was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia. He is expected to be OK.
Investigators said the man, who is in his 30s, was taking a selfie when he fell in.
