Texas high school student arrested after police find weapon in vehicle near campus

RICHARDSON, Texas — A North Texas high school student was arrested Wednesday after police received reports of an armed man walking toward the campus, authorities said.

The arrest came a day after a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, killed 19 students and two teachers.

The student, who attends Berkner High School in the Richardson Independent School District, was arrested after an AK-47 style pistol and a replica AR-15 style Orbeez rifle were found in his car near Berkner High School, the Richardson Police Department said in a news release.

He was charged with unlawful carrying of weapons in a weapon-free school zone, the statement said.

Police are not releasing the student’s name because he is a minor, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Berkner High School went on lockdown at 10:55 a.m. CDT, police said.

Police located the juvenile on campus but no weapons were found in school, WFAA-TV reported.

The pistol and replica rifle were found in the juvenile’s car in a parking lot across the street from the school, KDFW-TV reported.

Springridge Elementary School, located near the high school, was also placed on secure protocol, the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth reported.

“The Richardson Police Department would like to remind the public of the importance to report suspicious activity, as we recognize the vigilant awareness and actions of the person who initially called 911 to alert law enforcement,” the police department said in its news release.
