Stowaway found in plane’s landing gear after flight from Guatemala to Miami

MIAMI — Authorities took a 26-year-old man into custody Saturday morning after he apparently stowed away in the landing gear of an American Airlines flight from Guatemala to Miami, according to multiple reports.

Authorities said the man was found in the landing gear compartment of American Airlines flight 1182 after the plane landed at Miami International Airport just after 10 a.m., WFOR-TV and The Associated Press reported. The nearly 3-hour flight had taken off from Guatemala City, Miami-Dade Aviation Department communications director Greg Chin told the Miami Herald.

The man was evaluated by emergency medical services and taken to a hospital for a medical assessment, according to WFOR.

“Persons are taking extreme risks when they try to conceal themselves in confined spaces such as an aircraft,” officials with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said in a statement obtained by the Herald. “This incident remains under investigation.”

It was not immediately clear whether the man would face charges, according to the AP.
