According to a news release from the New Brunswick Police Department, Hyejeong Shin, of New Brunswick, was charged on Tuesday with providing a false government document with the intent to verify one’s identity or age.

Police said that Shin provided a false birth certificate to the New Brunswick Board of Education to enroll as a juvenile student at New Brunswick High School, the release stated.

“She was here for four days before being found out and barred from entering district property,” New Brunswick Public School District Superintendent Aubrey Johnson said in a video posted to social media by New Brunswick Today. “All appropriate authorities were immediately notified and the individual in question was arrested for providing false documentation.”

Schools in New Jersey are required to immediately enroll unaccompanied children, even when there are none of the required records normally needed for enrollment, NJ.com reported. Proof of guardianship is not necessary to immediately enroll an unaccompanied child or youth, according to the news outlet.

During her days in school, Shin spent a great deal of time with guidance counselors who were trying to find out more information about her, NBC News reported.

Ultimately, staff members at the school “uncovered this woman’s ruse and enabled us to address this situation promptly,” Johnson told board members, promising to find ways to prevent future bogus enrollments.

The woman did attend a few classes while she was enrolled at the high school NJ.com reported.

“We’re going to take a look at our process. … in terms of how to better look for fake documentation and other things,” Johnson told the board members, according to New Brunswick Today.
