Wild monkey chase? Police search for primates after reports, but turn up nothing

CINCINNATI — Police in Cincinnati may have been on a wild monkey chase, or the primates gave the cops the slip.

Police said they had two separate calls reporting that there were monkeys on the loose in the Queen City.

But more than 12 hours after the calls came in, police have come up empty, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

It had been reported that five monkeys were seen in the city, and some even swung from trees in a cemetery, WXIX reported.

But after the calls came in, dispatchers were not able to get back in touch with the people who reported the escaped animals, the Enquirer reported.

Cemetery officials looked at surveillance and also saw nothing out of the ordinary, according to the newspaper.

Witnesses said the animals are all different breeds, and some may be as tall as 5 feet.

“I just stood there as my eyes adjust[ed] to the pitch blackness and that is when I saw it, just standing there, taller than [a] garbage can, and its arms were real long hanging down and its arms are real skinny,” Alycha Tucker had told WLWT.

Workers from the Cincinnati Zoo were called about the allegedly loose monkeys, but zoo officials told Fox News, “it appears that whoever reported seeing monkeys was mistaken.”

The cemetery, for what it’s worth, has wild turkeys and The Associated Press reported that grainy video of the alleged monkeys roaming the grounds were really birds, not primates.
