Judge changes trial date for accused prison guard killer

“We’ll be ready”

There was a Monday death penalty hearing for Donnie Rowe, one of two men charged with killing two state prison guards during an escape from a prison bus, murders committed in 2017 in Putnam County. Co-defendant Ricky Dubose, from Madison County, is being tried separately.  Monday’s hearing focused on a defense request to postpone the trial. The trial that had been set to start in April will now begin in August.

“Our position hasn’t changed,” District Attorney Wright Barksdale said of the postponement. “We’ll be ready.”

Because of pretrial publicity, jury selection will take place in Cairo. Once jurors are selected in Grady County, they will be taken to Eatonton for the trial at the Putnam County courthouse.
