Commission passes alcohol ordinance change: Athens’ bars will close earlier

Last call at 9

Bars in Athens will close at 10 o’clock starting tonight: last call will come at 9 after last night’s vote from Athens-Clarke County Commissioners, who say the move is meant to slow the spread of coronavirus in Athens.

Update: Judge Norris has granted a temporary restraining order, allowing bars to remain open at normal operation hours, according to attorney Morris Wiltshire. Mask provisions will remain consistent with state law pending further order of the Court. A hearing is scheduled for next Thursday, but lawyer will attempt to mediate before then.

The bad news: a surge in COVID cases that threatens to pump the brakes on economic recovery.
