I’ve never thought of washing anything but dishes in my dishwasher, but apparently there is a new debate on whether or not you can wash fruit in the dishwasher.
A viral video on TikTok and Instagram shows a mom loading her dishwasher with fruits and vegetables. She says she’s done it many times, and that it makes perfect sense.

The Food and Drug Administration begs to differ.
“The FDA does not recommend utilizing kitchen appliances, such as the dishwasher, to wash produce safely and effectively,” an FDA official tells TODAY.com. “The FDA only recommends washing produce thoroughly under running water.”
The official goes on to say, “the main concern is the introduction of residual chemical contaminants from detergents and rinse aids into the pores and natural crevices of the produce”.
So if you were planning on running your apples through a quick cycle in your dishwasher, stick to cool running water in your sink instead.
