ORLANDO, Fla. — A premature baby, born at just 22 weeks old and weighing 12 ounces at a Florida hospital, is one of the smallest and most premature newborns in the world.
Diana spent six months in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Winnie Palmer Hospital and now weighs 7 pounds, WFTV reported.
“If she survives three days, we’re going to give her two weeks,” mother Jomary Tavarez said. “Two weeks turned into months, and now we’re here six months later.”
Diana was added to the University of Iowa’s Tiniest Baby Registry, a group of 10 babies recognized as the smallest and youngest to survive birth.
“I looked at her and I just shook my head like, ‘She’s just really small,’” father Federico Peguero said. “She is obviously the smallest human being I’ve ever seen.”
